5 DIY Projects To Improve Your Workout At Home: With home workouts becoming the new norm, it’s time to start thinking about how to outfit your home gym. Fitness equipment can be very expensive, and all of the parts you need for a full-body workout add up quickly. Save on the home gym by going the DIY way.

When you’re ready to create the best home gym, check out these five DIY fitness equipment projects.

DIY parallets for full body strength

If you’re looking for an affordable way to exercise your whole body, make these DIY parallette bars. You only need a few different lengths of PVC pipes, PVC fittings, PVC primer and cement. Assembly is quick, which means you can start exercising your arms, legs, and core with these simple parallets.

  • Homemade yoga wheel

    Whether you like yoga or not, a yoga wheel is a must have for your home gym. This accessory deepens your stretches, improves flexibility and relieves tension. Here’s a DIY tutorial on how to make your own yoga wheel from PVC tubing:

Materials needed

    • 12 inch diameter PVC pipe
    • Yoga mat
    • E6000 glue
    • (2) clamps
    • Utility knife
    • Optional: sander (to smooth the jagged edges of your PVC pipe)
    • Mild soap and water (to clean the PVC wheel before attaching the mat)

Steps to Make PVC Yoga Wheel

    1. Cut your PVC pipe into a 5 “or 6” wide wheel.
    2. Clean your bike with soap and water. If you want to sand the PVC, do so now.
    3. After cleaning the wheel, work on cutting the yoga mat. First cut the mat to 12.5 “in length (this will give you an additional 0.5” to work with since the PVC is 12 “in diameter).
    4. Now cut the mat to match the width of your yoga wheel. If your PVC is 5 inches wide, cut your mat to be 5.5 inches wide. If your PVC is 6 inches wide, cut your mat to 4.75 inches wide.
    5. Before attaching your mat to the bike, make sure the PVC is covered to your liking.
    6. Once you are happy with the cover, glue your mat onto the wheel. Glue in sections and reinforce the glued sections with the clamps. Let the glue dry for 30 minutes before moving on to another section.
    7. After you’ve glued the last section (and trimmed off excess mat with the utility knife), let your yoga wheel sit for 48-72 hours before using it.

Balance it with DIY balance board

As you transition to a home gym, don’t forget to work on your balance. Muscle strength and cardio are important, but balance shouldn’t be ignored. One of the best ways to improve your balance is with a balance board – that’s simple enough to make yourself!

Take a 6 inch diameter PVC pipe and cut it 12 inches long. Take a wooden board and cut it to 30-36 inches in length (make sure the width is longer than your feet). Use a 1 “x1 / 2” piece of wood to create two stoppers. Screw these stoppers close to the ends of the 30-36 inch board. Place the plate (stopper side down) on the PVC pipe. Try out your DIY balance board! Hold on to something (such as a chair or wall) to stabilize yourself until you get used to it.

Up Your Barre game

Has your favorite barre studio closed? While you may have thought your practice was no longer possible, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that you can still do barre workouts at home. Read below on how to make a barre for your home gym.

materials

    • 25 inch diameter PVC pipe cut into the following lengths:
      • (2) 60 inches in length
      • (4) 10 inches in length
      • (2) 26 inches in length
      • (2) 8 inches in length
    • (6) 1.25 inch PVC sheets
    • (4) 1.15 inch PVC tees
    • Mallet or PVC primer and cement

Steps for DIY barre

    1. Do the feet. Take one of the 10 inch pieces of pipe and attach an elbow to one end (with the opening facing down). Then attach a T-piece to the other end (with the center opening of the T-piece facing up). Add a second 10 “piece of pipe to the other end of the tee and complete that foot by attaching an elbow to the end of the second 10” piece. Repeat step 1 to create the second barre foot.
    2. Build the legs. Insert the 26 inch PVC pieces into the opening of the tees on the feet. Tighten the tees on the top of these 26 inch pieces so that the center opening of these tees faces inward toward each other.
    3. Add the lower bar. Take one of the 60 inch pieces of pipe and insert it into the center opening of the tees. This creates the lower (or single) bar. You may need to use a hammer to secure the lower bar in place.
    4. Start by making the top bar. Add one of the 8 inch PVC pieces to one of the open tees. Then place one elbow on top of this 8 inch piece, making sure that the opening of the elbow is facing in. Repeat step 4 a second time on the other side of the bar.
    5. Finish the top bar. Add the second 60-inch piece of PVC on the opened ends of the elbows.
    6. Secure everything in place with a rubber mallet or PVC primer and cement.

Rock your new barre fitness from the comfort of your home!

Let cool down with PVC foam roller

After a hard workout at your home gym, it is important to cool down and relax your muscles. A foam roller is perfect for relaxing muscles and increasing freedom of movement. Equip your home gym with a homemade PVC foam roller.

All you need is 2 foot 4-inch PVC pipe, a yoga mat (like the leftovers from making your yoga wheel), and duct tape. To make the foam roll, cover the tube with the mat to measure how much mat you need to completely cover the tube. Then cut the mat with a utility knife according to these dimensions. Finally, attach the mat to the pipe with the tape (tape the line where the two ends of the mat meet and to the sides of the roller) Now you can use your foam roller for a nice massage at home!
