The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) will require Australian Internet Service Providers to block access to 18 unlicensed online gambling websites.
Brands to be blocked from Australia include Syndicate Casino, Fast Pay Casino, BitStarz, and King Billy Casino.
The ACMA said it had received numerous complaints about the 18 websites and after an investigation found that they were in violation of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.
Blocking websites is one of several enforcement options that the ACMA is using to combat unlicensed gambling in the jurisdiction.
222 gambling websites have been banned since the agency made its first ban request in November 2019. This included lockdown orders issued in August, October and November 2020.
In addition, ACMA said that over 100 unlicensed operators have withdrawn from the Australian market since the agency began enforcing new offshore gambling rules in 2017.
In November, ACMA reminded all licensed operators in Australia to adhere to the rules of gambling advertising after highlighting inconsistencies in the industry’s interpretation of controls.
The agency has been monitoring the effectiveness of the advertising rules since 2018 when they were introduced. Although she didn’t identify any major concerns, she uncovered inconsistencies in the way gambling companies interpreted the rules.
