Legalized gambling in sports was narrowly approved by voters in Colorado in November 2019. The program should provide tax revenue for the state’s water plan. Once operating costs are met and $ 130,000 can be made available for gambling addiction services, the tax revenue from sports betting will flow into the water fund.
However, shortly after voters passed the measure, the state’s Joint Budget Committee issued a memo forecasting less tax revenue than expected from sports betting, warning that Colorado could generate only a fraction of the revenue estimates previously reported.
Even during the pandemic, when most U.S. sports were put on hold as sports betting in Colorado in May, Coloradans placed millions of bets on sports like European table tennis and South Korean baseball.
