FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Three professional sports leagues are playing again at the same time. It’s a different tune than it was almost a year ago when professional sports stopped.
At the same time, Indiana was legalized mobile sports betting in its freshman year.
The state reported mobile sports betting revenue of $ 46,516,489 for fiscal 2020. Most of the bets came from Draft Kings, Fan Duel and Bet MGM.
Bowen Center therapist James Wright said he has also seen an increase in people seeking treatment for gambling addiction since mobile sports betting became legal.
Wright stated that gambling addiction is a process addiction.
The American Addictions Center explains that a process addiction is: “The compulsion to continually focus on an activity or behavior despite its adverse effects on the person’s ability to remain mentally and / or physically healthy and functional in the home and community to let in. “
“In your brain, with this distorted thinking, you really think that the next shot will be your ticket. Everyone wants easy money. That’s a lot behind it that powers it too, especially your online sports betting. “Man, if I hit this one, I’ll make $ 50 on this one.” And they do it. But for your partner, children, or whatever, it is best to sit down with your spouse and set a budget for it, ”Wright said.
“Anytime you do things like this, you have to hold back and some people just can’t,” said Kyle Richardson, analyst at The Fantasy Headliners.
The Fantasy Headliners is a YouTube site dedicated to sports research that can help players or those interested. Richardson said he also works with mobile sports betting websites that support his channel.
“You know, it’s not surprising that Indiana was some kind of destination. Definitely around here when it was legalized. I saw a lot of billboards go up, a lot of shows. It’s like everything. It’s a marketplace. All of these companies compete for different consumers, ”said Richardson.
If you’ve been watching sports recently, you probably can’t help but notice a large number of ads for mobile sports betting. Wright says this can be a trigger for people with a gambling addiction.
We asked viewers and many are fed up with seeing the ads. Others say they use the ability to make these bets. You can find some answers in the gallery below.
Wright explains that there is a surefire way to mobile betting. The best option is to set a budget and discuss that budget with others.

Richardson supports sports betting. He says it provides a safe place for people to place bets and some of the proceeds go to the state. Richardson also notes that the apps are also taking steps to curb addiction.
DraftKings offers addiction prevention options by offering a Responsible Gaming section in the Sports Betting app. Players can set expenses, bets and time limits. There is also a cool down feature that pauses use of the app and a User Protection section that has facts about the dangers of gambling and contact information for addiction help.
