Four potential providers have spoken to the legislature in favor of an agreement that allows them to conduct online gambling and sports betting. It’s the latest in a year-long push for expanded gambling in the state.

The Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes operate the state’s two casinos under an agreement the state entered into with the tribes in 1991. You get the exclusive right to play in Connecticut. Rodney Butler, chairman of Mashantucket Pequot, said it would honor the pact to give the tribes rights to online gaming and sports betting.

“We should all be proud of the Connecticut State’s tribal partnership history. It is an intergenerational, beneficial alliance between sovereign governments. That’s not a statement that has been repeated too many times in history, ”Butler said.

Ray Pineault is with the Mohegan Tribe.

“We ask our partners to remember the underlying exclusivity of our tribal nations and to respect it when it comes to gambling in our state. Sports betting can and should be implemented without jeopardizing these agreements, ”said Pineault.

The state lottery company and off-track betting company Sportech are also considering offering online games or sports betting.

Connecticut lawmakers in both parties said online sports betting will be on the agenda for the next General Assembly term. And Governor Ned Lamont is also in talks with the tribes.
