Everyone has a lazy gambling habit. Call it a bare bones strategy or call it what it is – play without thinking too much.
You are only in the game, not in it, to win it. Maybe you need a break. Or maybe you teach the game to someone new … But is lazy gaming always a bad thing?
In an ideal environment, you will only play if you are paying attention and feeling great. But to expect this to stay that way in a casino is how to expect a tire with a slow leak to last the next 1000 miles.
People resort to this type of real money gambling as they resort to spare tires. It will carry the burden for a while, but it won’t get you very far.
The best lazy players know when to leave the game or when to pay attention again.
Personally, I view lazy gambling as a step back from being fully engaged. This is the same as using the autoplay function for slots.
But without the ability to employ a strategy, this is still not the ideal example. If you choose to be a lazy gamer, you shouldn’t just give up your options. You should still be playing strategically.
Lazy gambling is more of a style than a system. You choose how you want to manage your game. And it’s not a strategy that applies to every type of game.
With that in mind, you don’t have to go all-in. This is just a way to relax without walking away completely. Here’s how to have fun playing lazy and keep your bankroll from running out.
1 – Choose your wagers
If you have to idle for a while it doesn’t make much sense to bet the maximum. While you change your bet, the odds don’t change, but I assume you won’t want to think about it much for a while.
Despite your lazy gambling strategy, your money is not going to manage itself. It is safer to bet the minimum than to lose the maximum on every game.
Card counters do that anyway. If they believe that most of the cards in the shoe are of little value, reduce their stakes.
When explaining a game to someone new it doesn’t matter if you lose with a minimum bet. Even new players feel comfortable losing stakes.
2 – Only make sure bets, with one exception
Telling your friend to place a bet on the pass line at the craps table can help explain the game as it is played. This bet usually doesn’t go away instantly. For the same reason, you can explain how the no-pass bets work on the next round.
The key to long-term success in blackjack is knowing when to apply an exception rule. The bare bones strategy is that you stand on 17 or higher and hit 16 or lower.
Splitting aces should be obvious, but other options require more thought. If you don’t miss an opportunity to break up, you are not in a lazy game mode.
Baccarat is made for lazy gambling. You can bet on the banker or the player and the odds of winning are slim. You can still bet money on a tie, but it doesn’t pay off as often.
Lazy roulette gambling favors the outside bets. The rule of thumb in lazy gambling is to take as little risk as possible. There is one exception to this rule of thumb, however.
If the game allows a player to place more than one bet at a time, it is okay to add a slightly less risky bet. In roulette, this slightly less risky bet is placed on one of the 12-number bets. In craps you either take the chances or you put them.
Should you be betting odds by betting you won’t fold? Decide in advance how you want to hedge your bets. Some players just bet pass / pass and don’t come / don’t come. They ignore the odds of winning and riskier bets with higher payouts.
3 – Counterintuitive betting is okay when done safely
Since lazy gambling avoids the more complicated betting, your remaining leverage is how much you bet. Lowering the stakes to a minimum is one way of making things easier, but it’s optional.
If you are only playing safe bets, you are already playing the best odds and lowest odds. This is the time to increase your bets without thinking through every game.
The rule of thumb is simple. Safe bet + maximum bet = riskier bet + minimum bet.
All you do is simplify the game for a while. Better to use safe bet + maximum bet style. The house edge is the lowest.
Admittedly, that’s a game strategy. You can’t do without strategy 100%. Lazy gambling swaps complex strategies for simpler gambling.
In some games, it won’t matter much. In baccarat it doesn’t make much difference whether you bet on the player rather than the banker. In casino blackjack games, many beginners follow simple rules anyway. So if you teach someone the game, this is probably how you will begin them.
Once your friend is comfortable with the basics, you can call them again and show them the more complex strategies.
4 – Only play the video versions of games
If there’s a crowd around the craps or roulette table, it is sure to be fun. It’s very fun to share a blackjack or baccarat table with four or five other people.
But if you want a break from the crowd, head for the video consoles. In online gambling, it’s as easy as changing the game you play.
You play the video versions of table games at your own pace. You can play 400 to 600 hands of video blackjack or video poker every hour, or you can play one hand every minute. It depends on you.
You can regain your focus by playing solo. Some players prefer the video versions of their favorite games over live groups. Playing can be relaxing and intense at the same time.
5 – Avoid more complicated versions of table games
If the casino offers standard blackjack, take a seat at this table. If the casino offers European roulette, choose this variant.
The more rules and specifics the casino adds to a game, the more likely they are to improve their lead.
If you haven’t studied the rule variants in advance, then don’t play the games.
If you are in a small casino and they don’t pay 3: 2 for blackjack, see if they have a video console that pays standard odds. Always choose the odds you know if you want to play more passively.
6 – Study the rules of a new game before playing it
If you are feeling adventurous, you can be a lazy gamer and try new games. Study the rules first. If you can decipher the rules quickly, it is likely easy enough to play casually.
If you have to think about what to do to get the best payout possible, the game is probably not a good game for lazy gambling.
In roulette, you only want to play a single zero wheel if you can get it. The fewer green slots, the better.
In blackjack, you want the 3: 2 table if there is one. I played 6: 5 blackjack but not happy. Easier play will frustrate you less when the odds are good.
If you want to play real money keno it is lazy to stick with pick 4 through pick 7 games. I would choose pick 5 or pick 6 myself. The fewer numbers I have to match, the better. The higher the payout percentages for my games, the better.
Keno may have terrible odds and probabilities, but some Keno options are clearly better than others. And that applies even if you don’t study the rules of the type of keno you are playing.
Again, this is not a strategy guide. Lazy gambling is a style of play that allows you to relax and think less about the game you are playing. You can continue to enjoy the game, but you can also relax a little.
I’ve never spent an entire evening in lazy gambling mode, but I’m sure some people do. There’s no shame in having a preferred style of play.
Following these lazy gambling rules will minimize the “oops” moments and are less likely to make a bigger mistake. Any friends you introduce to the game of chance will appreciate your choice.
