January 5, 2021

(PRESS RELEASE) – With the Mega Millions and Powerball lottery jackpots each crossing the $ 400 million threshold, the National Council on Problem Gambling urges consumers to protect themselves from excessive gambling and urges Lotteries and the media to Promote responsible gambling messages.

“There’s a lot of consumer and media interest when jackpots for Mega Millions or Powerball hit staggering numbers,” said Keith Whyte, Executive Director of NCPG. “The National Council on Problem Gambling believes these high jackpot events provide an opportunity to send clear, responsible gambling messages that will help people who choose to gamble make informed decisions about their gaming.”

Consumers should follow these five simple tips for responsible gaming:

  • Set a time and money limit for gambling.
  • Do not gamble to escape anxiety, stress, or depression.
  • Know where to get help with gambling problems.
  • Minors are not allowed to play most forms of gambling.
  • Don’t gamble with money used to pay bills.

“Lotteries should always contain responsible gambling messages, such as the minimum age to play or where to seek help for those who may be involved in problem gambling,” Whyte said. “We believe it is very important that the media reinforce these messages, especially when large jackpots generate significant consumer interest.”
