The RUGBY league leaders will have their say in a government review of sponsorship by betting companies that threaten the game’s finances.
Clubs could be forced to remove gambling logos from players’ jerseys as part of a major sports advertising move under scrutiny by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
The Super League is sponsored by Betfred, who also supports the Championship, League One and Women’s Super League, with over £ 1 million a year, while Coral acted as a supporter of the Challenge Cup until his contract expired in late 2020.
Football would also be badly hit and a blow to snooker, darts and boxing, but this is familiar territory for the rugby league, which in the past has had to put up with the ban on tobacco and alcohol advertising that it once was heavily dependent.
The current Super League contract with Betfred, which was extended in 2019, expires at the end of the 2021 season. A spokesperson said: “In the coming months, sponsorship discussions will continue both internally and externally through 2022.
“Betfred was and is an excellent partner of the Super League.”
The spokesman confirmed that the Super League will contribute to the review and a statement from the RFL said: “The review will be proven by the end of March.
“The RFL and our valued partners will submit contributions for review.”
The RFL is expected to announce new sponsors for the Challenge Cup this week.
